being born Russian is a crime. you need to get deeper in nazism and fascism!

selling out weapons for profit is not a crime, supporting a long lasting war is not a crime, bombing other countries is not a crime, taking bribes from putler and ignoring genocide and fascism in Russia is not a crime. but trade with Russia is.
H - hypocrisy.

I am sorry but this is just stupid. The greatest effect of the sanctions so far was increasing influence of Putin among general population.

And this was expected.

Also the sanctions don't weaken military power of Russia unless you expect this war to last for years. They sure make people poorer - but this serves only as an incentive to join the army.

@Александр This shows that the #sanctions are still too weak. Only when the #Russia'ns eat with chopsticks they will wake up.

> This shows that the sanctions are still too weak.

It shows that the approach is ineffective.

How exactly sanctions are supposed to work in totalitarian society?

You obviously have no idea what the life here is. Maybe you should come and see for yourself :)

@Александр I understand that it is dangerous for the individual. But Putin has too many supporters and they only realize what's going on when they can't maintain their standard of living.

> But Putin has too many supporters and they only realize what's going on when they can't maintain their standard of living.

Again, this just doesn't work. You look at this from standpoint of well-off democratic society.

This is not the case. The core of Putin supporters are poor people. These are who go to war, join army on contract, work as the police and such. They already don't have high standards of living and reducing it further won't "make them see". They will just believe that the West is out to get them.

Look at North Korea, look at Iran and how wonderfully sanctions worked there and "made people see".

In fact the effect of some of the sanctions is the opposite - e.g. blocking payment systems makes it harder to use international services which means people have less access to information. Before the war I planned to run a public Mastodon node for Moscow. Sanctions made it prohibitively expensive for me. Basically they just hand Putin more control and influence over the Internet.

@Александр Aside from the human suffering, the economic damage in #Ukraine alone amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars so far. #Russia is rich in natural resources and will have to pay for it. I think every Russian should feel responsible for putting up 20% of his income for #reparations for Ukraine over the next few decades. The West, with its economic strength, is able to require these funds with tariffs on trade with Russia. And third countries that are currently benefiting from their business with Russia could be subject to corresponding tariffs.
By the way, I heard that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will be irretrievably destroyed by the salt water in six months to nine months. This puts Ukraine in a good strategic position.
I am deeply shocked about the coldness of Russian society towards the suffering in Ukraine.

On Sunday or on holidays a Russian know of nothing better
than to converse of war and battle calmor,
when in Ukraine not far away, perhaps in a kindergarten,
their soldiers commit crimes in war.
You stand by the window and sip a glass
and see the painted ships glide down the river.
Then in the evening you walk home content
and bless both Peace and peaceful times.

@Александр In #Ukraine many people are dying from a criminal #Russia'n #war and you regret that Russians will be poorer for 20 or 30 years.
That's very selfish.
@Iron Bug You fail to understand the dimensions of this #war crime. The sooner the #sanctions take effect, the less the #Russia'ns will have to pay for reconstruction in #Ukraine.
In any case, it will be very expensive for every Russian.

@Iron Bug Most people in #Ukraine who spoke Russian before the war no longer do. They hate the Russians, all Russians, because the Russians don't care about their fate at all. They will not understand if trade with #Russia continues as usual.

Trading with Russia is not a crime. Peaceful cooperation with other countries is an ideal to strive for.
Not trading with Russia is a (temporary) sanction because of the Russian crime to robber-murdering invade Ukraine.
@Playing with Fediverse That's true, but after the #war #Russia has to accept that a large share of the earnings from its exports goes to #Ukraine ( #reparations ). And the #G7 countries will enforce this with tariffs if necessary. The Baltic Sea pipelines are destroyed and will remain out of service, and Ukraine will not let Russian gas through unless it receives half of the proceeds from it.
