I joined when Google Plus bit the dust, only I didn't know it at the time when we were invited to join Diaspora. When Twitter bit the dust, I heard a lot about Mastodon, which does not federate with Diaspora...and so I settled on Friendica because that federates with both. The drawback is that I haven't found a Friendica instance big enough to handle the firehose of toots that is Mastodon, and the one I'm using to post this comment with has actually cut back, and painfully so.

I think it was around 2016-17 or so, I got on a small server run by a person I was familiar with. Found the whole thing confusing. Didn't know how to set things up to suit me, didn't know how anything worked. I gave up on it, most of the feed was in Japanese. Came back on a different, large server the day Elon bought Twitter and this time had no problems at all. 🤷

So before covid is the Mastodon version of the dark ages?

I did technically join back then, but at that time the web interface didn't filter out repeated boosts from multiple people I followed. So my feed was extremely repetitive and annoying, which led to me not coming here very often

When Twitter went to shit, I was happy to see that had been changed over here! So I hopped on the 'don and never looked back

From what I remember, it was just before Twitter shat itself to death (around early 2022 or late 2021), as I was getting into open-source and found that Fedi/Masto was libre. Even though it is still an imperfect solution (as it's ultimately still social media), it was really cozy to see how much less chaotic it was compared to Twitter at the time. ​:thinknyan:​

joined pre COVID for the same disgruntledness with Facebook, but bailed. Wasn't sure what it held for me not knowing anyone else on it. Came back to it with a renewed interest 2 yrs ago (?) in a fucking rage about Facebook again. That said.... I did clear and. Delete my 10-12 years of info, but had to start again just to be able to video chat with my Dad who is 82. And IRL, still, nobody I know is here on the fedi.

i joined lemmy when reddit paywalled their app API and then after a couple years realized that the only people who use lemmy are the most toxic assholes ever to read marx and so i left

and then i went back there for some reason and it still fucking sucked and i still fucking hate it there

  • Fist explored the Fedi via Masto in 2017,
  • 3 months later I learned that Masto ist by far the most limited platform in Fedi an switched to my own #Pleroma single user instance.
  • after 3 Jears on Pleroma I finaly changed to #Friendica which I still enyoy very much and works as may very own Fediplattfom here on fedi.solibre.de.
