I tend to ignore most of these eye-catching images; perhaps it's a kind of banner blindness. Also, while I really like illustrations as a supplement or complement to text, I tend to ignore (i.e., block) people who regularly post images that only contain text in large letters. This is especially true when my stream is flooded with many repetitions (reposts) of such images. I guess many people do that, silently.
Btw., diaspora allows adding text to images, setting html alt and title attributes. No line breaks, unfortunately.
